All of our meals have been approved by Mom and Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist Maria Adams and have received a thumbs up from our test Guinea Kids.
We promise that every Yumma Meal will …
✓ Contain no artificial flavors, additives or preservatives
✓ Contain no artificial trans fats
✓ Be low in sodium
✓ Have no refined sugar and added sugar kept to a minimum
✓ Be a good source of fiber
✓ Be a good source of protein
✓ Only contain ethically raised (e.g. pasture-raised, grass-fed) antibiotic-free and no added hormone meat
We believe in sourcing the best ingredients available. We are big into vegetables and whole grains, and try to pack as much of these into our foods as we possibly can. Where we do use meat, we care deeply about sourcing from ethically raised animals with a big focus on local, pasture-raised and grass-fed.
Fact: Little kids can be super picky when it comes to food, especially vegetables.
While we strongly encourage parents to keep exposing your kids to fully visible veggies, Yumma Meals are designed to give you a bit of a break from that struggle, happy in the knowledge that they are taking in the goodness of vegetables such as green beans, zucchini, broccoli, butternut squash, sweet potato, and cauliflower, cleverly blended into and disguised in our meals.
We believe that it’s never too early to introduce little ones to a range tastes and flavors. With this in mind we have created globally inspired meals using a variety of herbs and spices including allspice, cayenne pepper, coriander, cumin, garlic, ginger, mustard powder, oregano, paprika and parsley.
We are passionate about limiting sodium content in all of our meals. The prevalence of high sodium content in kids meals (and in pre-prepared and restaurant food generally) is a big bugbear of Yumma Mamas. While it’s easy to make food tasty by adding a ton of salt, we prefer for the natural flavors of our ingredients to shine through instead.
Allergens and Special Diets
We get that many kids these days suffer from allergy and intolerances so aim to make it as easy as possible for parents to find the products to suit their needs and have labeled our products accordingly.
We do not use peanuts, tree nuts, eggs or shellfish in any of our meals. The other producer in our shared facility does not process any of these allergens except for egg. Their production occurs on separate days to when Yumma Meals products are made and extra precautions are undertaken to avoid cross-contamination.
We use gluten and dairy in some of our meals. While gluten and dairy free meals are prepared on separate days from meals containing these allergens and surface areas and equipment are washed thoroughly between use, we cannot guarantee that there will be no traces in our products. If your kids have strong reactions to trace amounts of these allergens, you may need to consider carefully if Yumma Meals are right for you.
NOTE: While there are no tree or peanuts used in our meals or facility, some of our dry good ingredients are labelled "may contain traces of" or "manufactured in a facility that also processes" nuts e.g. Thrive Market Organic Chia Seeds used in the Superhero Choco Bites. We are also working on identifying and listing these ingredients where relevant on each of the product pages. In the meantime if you have any questions or concerns please email us firstname.lastname@example.org.
A further note on our nuggets: Our Cluck Cluck Chicken Nuggets are made using whole-wheat bread from A&J King Artisan Bakers. We love their delicious bread, made with clean, whole ingredients you can pronounce. Also #shoplocal. However, it has been bought to our attention that there may be some risk of cross-contamination as they also bake products containing nuts, so we are working on sourcing an alternative bread that is equally wholesome and delicious.
Our Food Will Never Contain …
We do not use any artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.
We do not use hydrogenated oils or additional trans fats in any of our food. In fact, our cooking oils and fats are limited to only avocado oil, olive oil or butter.
We do not use high fructose corn syrup or refined sugars. Where we do add a touch of sweetness we prefer to use honey, molasses or dates, with all their associated benefit from being packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. We especially love dates as a sweetener and use it whenever we can. As apart from nutritional and fiber benefits, they are low on the glycemic index (GI) scale = slow release of glucose = no big sugar spike = no sugar high / low craziness (to be avoided at all costs!)
We believe in full transparency in all of our meals so that you know exactly what you are getting in every Yumma Meal. Parents are encouraged to look at our ingredients list and nutrition labels, including sodium and sugar content. We are proud of the range of key vitamins and minerals, fiber and protein we are providing in our meals.
The freezing process suspends the enzyme activity that causes food to go bad. This means that our meals can be stored for longer without the need to add artificial preservatives, or even additional unnecessary natural preservatives such as salt, sugar and oil.
The freezing process also halts the process of deterioration of food to preserve maximum nutritional value.
Being able to reheat our meals from frozen also means that in our busy, messy lives, you don’t have to deal with having to plan ahead or being forced to “use up” our meals before they go bad.
In lieu of an ideal plastic-free solution, we figure if we have to use plastic, let’s use the best possible plastic on the market!
Our semicrystalline polyester (CPET) containers and laminate films are:
Stable at extreme temperatures (from -40F to 400F) and therefore suitable for use in microwaves and conventional ovens
Rated highly for food safety: non-toxic and hygienic, will not degrade on contact with food and beverages.
We want to make things as easy for you as possible, including being able to throw our trays in the microwave or oven (no extra washing up!). But if this isn’t your jam, do feel free to transfer our meals into other appropriate containers. We leave the choice up to you!
